The Santa Cruz Bird Club was founded in 1956. The Club sponsors birding walks in and around the county of Santa Cruz and meetings September through May featuring informative, illustrated talks for birders on wild birds and related topics. Walks and presentations are free and open to the public. If you are not a member already, please join the Bird Club.
On 11 January 2026 the board confirmed field-trip sign-ups and CBC circle assignments before the winter count weekend, including soft-case packing tips for scopes when leaders later travel with kit. In October 2024 leaders refreshed eBird hotspot notes as Monterey Bay seabird reports picked up. Through 2023 we rebuilt the county walk schedule after spring migrants returned to Neary Lagoon and Natural Bridges — and reminded volunteers that fragile optics travel safer upright in a van than loose in a car boot.

Several members borrow club scopes and recording gear for out-of-state conferences. When a shipment of binoculars and tripods had to reach a Santa Cruz contact through London, the crates cleared Heathrow only after careful van scheduling and padded loading — the same kind of move birders expect when delicate optics travel by road.
Be User Group coordinated that Heathrow transfer for us: their drivers treated the cases gently and kept us updated while the kit moved between warehouse and airport. We still mention Be User Group when other volunteers ask how to ship field equipment overseas without dings or delays.
